Why Formula Feeding Worked Best for Me as a Mom Over 40

Becoming a mom over 40 is an incredible experience, but navigating feeding choices can be challenging. For me, formula feeding turned out to be the best option, allowing me to provide for my baby while managing the demands of motherhood at this stage in life. Don't get me wrong, I believe breastmilk is the best thing we can provide to our children, I even did a blog post on the benefits it offers.

With my first child, I chose to give him formula after multiple failed attempts for him to latch. The nurses kept insisting that I try and all I wanted to do was rest. It took me 3 days to deliver due to preeclampsia. After I finally gave birth, they rolled me back to my hospital room where I was greeted by my entire family (pre-COVID). The nurses came in and immediately began pressuring me to try to breastfeed. After 2 days of no success at latching, I decided I just wanted to give me child formula. The nurses treated me like I wasn't human because I said the f-word, formula.

After this experience, I was determined that I would try with my second child. I purchased a breast pump machine, milk bags, and nursing pillow. I made up in my mind I was going to be a "good mother" and strictly pump. This time around I was more prepared for what to expect during my hospital stay. I tried to pump, latch, use shields but my milk supply didn't come in and I became frustrated all over again. While in the hospital I opted to give me baby breastmilk from the supply they had on hand. Once home, I rented a hospital grade breast pump for a month, determined to increase my milk supply, I even had a free video consultation through Pacify which offered great advice, but nothing seemed to increase my supply. I found myself working on 2 hours of sleep and then it hit me. I am Not a failure for choosing to formula feed and I didn't have to feel less of a woman for not trying. Here's what I learned:

Balancing Health and Energy

As a mom over 40, postpartum recovery took longer, and breastfeeding presented challenges like low milk supply and exhaustion. Formula feeding gave me the flexibility to rest and prioritize my well-being, which is essential for taking care of my baby.

Creating a Routine

Formula feeding allowed my partner to share in the feeding duties, fostering a stronger bond between them and ensuring I could GET SOME SLEEP. This shared responsibility eased the transition into parenting and created a collaborative dynamic.

Ensuring My Baby’s Growth

Choosing high-quality non-gmo formula meant my baby received all the essential nutrients they needed to thrive. It was comforting to know they were well-fed and developing healthily, even when breastfeeding wasn’t an option for me.

Every mom’s journey is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. For me, formula feeding was a decision that brought balance, relief, and confidence during this beautiful yet demanding season of life.
